Context

 

Every day, Plastic Omnium Clean Energy Systems provides major world automotive manufacturers with plastic fuel tanks produced with its own patented blow molding technology.

The fuel tanks are subject to a strict certification process ensuring their safety in operation as wells as when subjected to various hazardous situations. One of the certification test reproduces the conditions of a pool fire event.

The cost of this certification test is significant and therefore any failure at this stage results in high cost overrun and delay. In order to achieve a 100% success rate during these test, the development and design team need to be guided in their design choices by simulation.

 

Mission

 

The objective of this internship is to build a fully coupled simulation accounting for the pool fire, the heat transfer through the tank and the multiphase heat transfer occurring within the tank. Combustion, radiation and vaporisation will be included into the model.

 

Conduct a literature review of internal documents and scientific articles featuring detailed description of geometry, experimental conditions and data relevant to CFD validation.

Description of the Methodology that will be applied to ensure accuracy and robustness.

Generation of high quality geometry and meshes for validation purpose

Computation and Post-processing of CFD solutions with the following CFD software: Star-CCM+  (and optionally Fluent).

 

Background & Skills

 

(Ongoing) Master in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Fluent in English

High level of initiative, good communication skills

Programming skills (C/C++ and Python ideally)

Has already carried independently at least one significant CFD project beyond the mandatory classroom projects.
