Plastic Omnium Auto Inergy (USA) LLC seeks a Process Design Engineer in New Boston, Michigan, to design and implement processes to solve machinery and process selection problems for production of molded co-extruded plastic fuel systems in support of regional and global automotive programs. National and international travel 25%. Responsibilities are in an automotive manufacturing environment and require weekend work in production plant when manufacturing equipment is idle. Duties: develop best practices to ensure a common approach to solving machinery and process selection issues; lead trials for new products and support trials for existing products; provide support and input for new product programs requiring the application of blow-molding technology, including analysis of compliance to requirements and drafting reports for prototype activities associated with new product development; develop specifications for manufacturing solutions for blow molding and participate in research and development activities for the creation of manufacturing solutions for new products and optimization of existing designs; use Ishikawa and 5 Whys methodologies to assist plants in root cause problem-solving for process, cooling time, packaging, equipment, and quality issues of blow molding components; serve as expert on blow molding processes, develop training modules and standards for mold designs, and conduct blow molding trainings at manufacturing plants; develop knowledge management documentation for blow molding equipment and processes; audit blow molding co-extrusion equipment, Partial Wall Distribution System (PWDS) head tooling system builds, and post-mold cooling systems; lead supplier development meetings to improve equipment reliability, and investigate new technology to improve company’s competitiveness; assist with the implementation of continuous improvement activities (Operational Excellence Reviews). Minimum education required: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or computer engineering, or foreign equivalent degree. Minimum experience required: 2 years’ experience in a process engineering, mechanical engineering, or design engineering position with a Tier-1 automotive supplier of blow molded fuel systems. Special skills required: Must have 2 years’ work experience in each of the following: implementing new technology for advanced product or process development for blow molded co-extruded fuel systems; specifying, developing, and installing head tooling; providing training on blow molded practical application and post-mold cooling methods; auditing mold and tooling design for blow molded fuel systems; developing tank shell characteristics using vertical wall distribution programming methods; coordinating production equipment manufacture and product design; defining and applying PWDS tooling and post-mold cooling parameters to meet product quality characteristics; starting, operating, and shutting down blow molded co-extruded machinery during trials and product launches. Experience may be acquired concurrently.
