Plastic Omnium Auto Inergy (USA) LLC, a Tier-1 supplier of complete fuel systems and energy storage technologies to the automotive industry, seeks an Automation Engineer in New Boston, Michigan, to determine automation requirements for automotive programs. National and international travel 30 %. Responsibilities are in an automotive manufacturing environment and require weekend work in production plant when manufacturing equipment is idle. Duties: use Siemens programmable logic controllers (PLC) and Wonderware software to design, install, program and troubleshoot automated equipment (FANUC and RI Vision robots, HMI hardware, and pneumatic and electrical instrumentation); develop, commission, and provide training on, finishing and assembly equipment for the manufacture of fuel systems using hot-plate welding and blow molding processes; ensure proper performance of process control instrumentation, conveyor, variable frequency for bowl feeders, and robotic vision systems; implement automation systems (Industry 4.0) into manufacturing plant, and integrate Eigen smart modules with PLC machines; train maintenance personnel in the proper setup of automation equipment; develop, implement, and monitor continuous improvement and corrective action activities to increase operational efficiency and troubleshoot downtime and decreased PPM issues; apply 5S methodology to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of automation equipment and systems; serve as primary contact with internal and external suppliers for error proofing (poka yoke). Minimum education required: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or automation engineering, or foreign equivalent degree. Minimum experience required: 2 years’ experience in an automation engineering or project engineering position (or combination) with a Tier-1 automotive supplier of complete fuel systems. Required skills: Must have 2 years’ work experience in each of the following: troubleshooting hot-plate welding and blow molding processes; developing specifications for linear and robotic hot-plate welding; programming FANUC robots; using Wonderware software to design HMI interface; developing and delivering training material to maintenance and engineering teams; using Siemens PLC to troubleshoot machines (cooling, welding, assembly, and blow molding) and program simple blocks of code; applying lean manufacturing and error proofing methodologies (Fishbone, 5 Whys, 5S, and poke yoke). Experience may be acquired concurrently.
